The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off win over Fleetwood.
Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
