Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who fled following the blast was located not long after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location showed the structure left as a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.
The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents caused the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the interior minister said.
The wounded by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had happened on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
