Warning: spoilers ahead - This piece discloses details from Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, viewers witnessed murders, double-crosses, serious side-eye, and an unforgettable incident that cut through the overwhelming tension.
Yet on the final evening, the ultimate victor of the first Celebrity Traitors was revealed.
From 19 contestants, just a handful were left standing: Deceivers and faithfuls competing for the prize.
Soon, the competition tightened to just three: the final players.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the champion, in a shocking result that went viral and made him tearful.
"It's been tearing me apart, my apologies," he declared, revealing to the other players that he was actually a traitor. "I'm an awful human being."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "It's all right."
Social media immediately exploded with this development. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," commented one user.
"There could not have been a better conclusion," stated another, while a third described it as "the TV moment of the year."
The organization he selected, Neuroblastoma UK, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot amounting to eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
However, his victory still left the nation in shock, according to industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, among everyone, executing a masterclass in deceit felt just as probable as him keeping composure through one of his own punchlines."
On subsequent discussions, the other contestants explained the reasons nobody had truly doubted him.
"He might have appeared to breakfast in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was a traitor. I was too busy laughing," one participant said.
"The majority didn't target him because how does one eliminate someone who is so loveable?" questioned another celebrity.
Carr said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the show.
"I want to participate once more... I doubt it would work a second time!"
The final episode was lengthened to 70 minutes on television. There was a different start than usual, as all the celebs were aware who would appear at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard some very uplifting, and atypical for the show soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from each of the finalists' time in the castle.
True to form, Alan Carr provided some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I started this game a bit of an anxious mess. I've betrayed some really good friends to save myself, I've murdered beloved figures in plain sight. Apparently I'm a better liar and traitor than I thought."
At the same time, another contestant commented that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than competing with a national team", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
Early on of the finale, various contestants seemed to be attempting to become the fashion standout of the castle, taking over from an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
The winner appeared at breakfast resembling a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
However, he got out-jacketted by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.
Next up was the challenge, with the remaining contestants boarding a locomotive called - naturally - The Deceivers' Railway.
This task saw them ripping up images of eliminated players. Spare a thought for a player who managed to get hit in the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, it was time for the elimination discussion.
Two traitors did a pinky promise in advance, pledging to stick together. "We've progressed significantly, I'm not going to throw him under a bus," stated one, while their partner just giggled.
And one adhered to their agreement. But, having slipped under the radar for most of the game, the other still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor looked like he was in significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Now I'm on my own, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm unpredictable, without direction."
Online platforms and viewers were similarly upset.
"I did NOT want this contestant to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," said an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," wrote a different viewer.
However, there remained no time to dwell on this departure. Before long, the game reached the endgame - which was what we were really all here for.
The final four gathered around the fire pit. And the alliance collapsed, just when it mattered the most, in a truly WTF moment.
One contestant was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their partner, who betrayed them.
"This pains me to be betrayed at the final moment like that," remarked the ousted contestant. Subsequently, it was revealed that if they ever communicate, the eliminated contestant calls their former ally by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, only three contestants remained in the game: the last participants.
One player, looking incredibly smug, voted to end the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and everything depended on the third, who did the same - resulting in the traitor was the winner.
According to commentators, the moment where remaining contestants consoled the champion was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be in the running for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.
Happily, the champion quickly regained composure from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and here I am the champion," he said.
He also joked about that infamous murder - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the presenter in the final scene and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, plotting and sometimes surprising incidents may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. Yet it actually occur. And we will miss it.
