Ex-President Trump has threatened to intervene in Iran if its regime harm protesters, leading to admonishments from high-ranking figures in Tehran that any involvement from Washington would violate a critical boundary.
Through a online statement on recently, Trump stated that if the country were to shoot and kill demonstrators, the America would “intervene on their behalf”. He noted, “our response is imminent,” without clarifying what that might mean in reality.
Public unrest are now in their second week, representing the most significant in recent memory. The current unrest were triggered by an unprecedented decline in the national currency on recently, with its worth falling to about a record depreciation, worsening an existing financial crisis.
Seven people have been confirmed dead, including a volunteer for the Basij security force. Footage reportedly show security forces carrying shotguns, with the noise of discharges present in the video.
In response to the statement, a top adviser, counselor for the supreme leader, warned that Iran’s national security were a “red line, not material for adventurist tweets”.
“Any external involvement targeting the country's stability on false pretenses will be met with a forceful retaliation,” he said.
Another senior Iranian official, Ali Larijani, alleged the outside actors of having a hand in the protests, a typical response by officials in response to protests.
“Trump must realize that foreign interference in this internal issue will lead to destabilisation of the entire area and the damage to US assets,” he stated. “US citizens must know that Trump is the one that initiated this provocation, and they should pay attention to the security of their soldiers.”
Iran has vowed to strike US troops deployed in the Middle East in the past, and in recent months it attacked a facility in the Gulf after the US struck Iranian nuclear enrichment sites.
The current protests have occurred in Tehran but have also reached other cities, such as a major city. Business owners have closed their stores in solidarity, and youth have taken over campuses. While economic conditions are the central grievance, demonstrators have also chanted anti-government slogans and criticized what they said was graft and poor governance.
The head of state, the president, initially invited demonstration organizers, taking a softer stance than authorities did during the 2022 protests, which were met with force. Pezeshkian stated that he had instructed the administration to listen to the protesters’ “legitimate demands”.
The fatalities of protesters, though, may indicate that the state are taking a harder line against the unrest as they persist. A statement from the powerful military force on recently cautioned that it would take a harsh line against any outside meddling or “unrest” in the country.
While Iranian authorities face protests at home, it has tried to stave off accusations from the United States that it is reviving its atomic ambitions. Iran has stated that it is ceased such work anywhere in the country and has expressed it is open for negotiations with the west.
