Should Bellingham wants to force his way once again into England’s strongest squad, it would be smart to cut out the unnecessary reactions. His response upon realizing that the substitute board was being shown after a match of inconsistency in Tirana was not good enough.
"I’d rather not make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the players who come in," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them being a professional."
Bellingham has to learn. There was no call for a tantrum. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it England two goals ahead in a dead rubber match, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for fouling an opponent. It was not a controversial substitution. Actually it would have been foolish for the manager to not substitute him considering there was a risk he would rule himself out of the first match of the World Cup by getting a second caution.
Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s annoyance as he realized that he would be substituted for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the sideline it was obvious that the manager did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge for Bellingham. He praised Rashford for providing the assist for Harry Kane to head in the team's second, but everything else was harmful to his cause. It's not like arguing was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The German has stressed repeatedly honoring the team structure and the importance of showing proper conduct.
The midfielder, left out of the previous squad, has faced close inspection since coming back to the squad in the current camp. Practically he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to coming off the pitch as the side completed a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a tough opposition from the Albanian team.
As a result opinions are divided on if the team perform optimally when Bellingham plays. The evidence here was inconclusive. There was experimentation from Tuchel early on. Under him, England have gained England structure and clarity over the past few matches, employing a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but the approach changed versus Albania. Quansah was given his first cap, Wharton made his first start for England and the role of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder gave a faint echo to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He made a chance for Eze during the second half but at times seemed trying too hard. Several poorly executed passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player at the beginning. England's play was messy after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents followed he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card was shown after he was dispossessed by Broja and brought down the former Chelsea striker.
Ultimately England’s depth made the difference. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who appeared better suited to the position that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka whipped in a corner kick for the captain to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that set pieces are going to be vital in the upcoming tournament.
Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The brilliance of Rashford’s assist for the second goal was somewhat overlooked in the ridiculousness of the Rogers substitution. After the final whistle, the focus was on him. The coach approached from behind and guided the Real Madrid midfielder in the direction of the English fans. Their connection remains intact. Tuchel is not willing to give up on him at this stage. But if the coach is prepared to grant him centre stage is not guaranteed.
